What inspired you to get into photography?

I love to travel, and I love nature. I want to be able to capture the beauty of it all and be able to share it with everyone. For me, photography enables me to inspire people to get outside, get out of their comfort zone and go adventure. Therefore enabling people to see life outside of their personal screens.

What is so special to you about nature photography?

I love wide open spaces (I’m a bit claustrophobic) so being outside where there are no people is my calm place. Space helps me relax and inspires my creation. If I’m ever having a hard day or I feel like there is too much going on, I go to nature to reset so I can focus. I want others to feel the way I feel when I’m exploring. To capture a moment that makes me feel calm, happy or inspired is how I want people to feel when they're looking at my photographs. I believe you can "feel" from a photo, and to me that’s the joy of photography which I can share with one person or the world.

Where is your favourite travel destination?

This is a hard one... I don’t think I could pinpoint one location, however the ocean always makes me feel calm. Therefore in Australia it would be the Mornington Peninsula and Sorrento. All the rock pools and huge waves take me back to my childhood. It’s always amazing there because no picture is the same when the waves crash over the rocks. As for overseas, I would say Sapa in Vietnam, this place in one word is breathtaking! The mountains, the people, the food... it’s just pure joy!

Tell me about your pets.

I have two cats; Walter 10 and Gus who is 4. Both my boys are FIV positive. This doesn’t affect their lives much at all, it just means they need a little extra love and care. Basically, their immune systems are a little lower than a normal cat but they can still live a long happy life. I just lost my girl Dinah- my green eyed beauty who I had for 10 years. It’s been a month since she’s been gone and I miss her everyday.

Who is your favourite photographer? What is it that draws you to their style?

I honestly don’t have one! I love a lot of styles of photography and appreciate everyones vision. Instagram is such a great platform for photographers, even ones with hardly any followers have the opportunity to share their work. I’m inspired by the magnitude of people getting out there and following their passion.

Are you working on anything at the moment?

I’m in the middle of starting another business that will eventually incorporate my photography! It’s in it’s early stages but it’s got to do with using my creativity with clay! Watch this space!

What is your favourite quote?

"If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?"

Lewis Carroll

How would you describe your personal style?

Well, I’m not sure... I just choose things I like and that I think are cool! Some days I love bold bright colours and other days I wear all black and sneakers’ . It really depends on the day and how I’m feeling. I just go with the flow and do whatever makes me feel great that day.

If you had a million dollars, what charity would you donate to?

I would donate to as many animal charity’s as possible! However, one would definitely be Edgar’s Mission, they do amazing work for the welfare of all animals and I’m truly inspired by their work. One day I would love to have my own farm where I could have a bunch of rescue animals and just have them live a happy carefree life to roam and play.

What ways do you try and lessen your environmental footprint?

To be honest, I just try to be a decent human. I don’t litter or throw anything from my car window. If I see trash on the street or on the beach I'll pick it up and put it in the bin. I recycle everything I possibly can and buy recyclable materials.

Thank you Mel for opening up your mind to us. We are truly grateful to have stumbled across your beautiful photography, to then find out you have a heart of gold. Keep being the best you can be.

Stay wild. Stay free.

All the love,

Wolf & Bear
