Weekend Adventures from Sydney: 7 Drives Worth Doing

Weekend Adventures from Sydney: 7 Drives Worth Doing

There's a particular kind of freedom in pointing the car away from Sydney on a Friday afternoon with no fixed plan and a weekend in front of you. These are the drives we keep going back to — each one far enough to feel like a proper escape, close enough to do without burning the whole weekend on the road.

1. Hunter Valley — 2.5 Hours North

The obvious answer, but obvious for good reason. Wine, food, open countryside and enough boutique accommodation to suit any budget. Best in autumn when the vines are turning and the crowds thin out slightly. Go midweek if you can — the Valley on a weekday feels completely different to a Saturday.

Don't miss: Pokolbin's small producers — the boutique wineries away from the main strip are consistently better.

2. South Coast — Kiama to Jervis Bay

Drive the coast road rather than the highway. Stop at Kiama blowhole, walk the coastal path at Gerringong, then keep going south to Hyams Beach — one of the whitest sand beaches on the planet, backed by the extraordinarily clear water of Jervis Bay. Dolphin sightings are common year-round. Whale season runs May to November.

Distance from Sydney: 2–2.5 hours to Kiama, 3.5 hours to Jervis Bay

3. Blue Mountains — 1 Hour West

The closest proper mountain escape from the city. Leura and Katoomba for the cafes and lookouts, Blackheath for the walks, Mt Victoria for the slower pace and better food than the tourist strip suggests. In winter the valley fills with mist in the mornings and the light through the eucalypts is genuinely extraordinary.

Best for: A single winter night — arrive Friday evening, walk Saturday, drive home Sunday morning before the crowds come up.

4. Port Stephens — 2.5 Hours North

Sydney's weekend beach escape that fewer people make the drive to than the South Coast. Anna Bay, Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay — quieter beaches, the largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere (genuinely), and dolphins in the bay almost every morning.

Don't miss: Stockton Beach at dawn. It requires a 4WD or a walk but the light is worth it.

5. Snowy Mountains — 5 Hours South

The long one — but worth it for a long weekend. Australia's high country in summer is wildflower meadows, crystal creeks and near-empty hiking tracks. In winter it's snow. Thredbo is the most accessible entry point; Charlotte Pass for something quieter.

What to wear: The altitude changes things. Even in summer the Snowies can drop to single digits at night — the Vintage 1/4 Zip and a Gone Hiking Hoodie earn their place in the pack here.

6. Kangaroo Valley — 2 Hours South

Hamlets of the Southern Highlands that deserve a weekend of their own. Kangaroo Valley is beautiful in any season — the valley floor walk, the river, the 1800s stone architecture of Hampden Bridge. Moss Vale and Bowral nearby for food worth driving for.

7. Central Coast — 1 Hour North

Underrated. The Bouddi National Park coastal walk from Putty Beach to MacMasters Beach is one of the genuinely great short walks in NSW — ocean views, wildflowers in spring, and almost no one on it during the week. Avoca Beach for the pub after.
